LGBTQIA+ History Month

Origin of LGBTQIA+ History Month: It is in observance of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights tied with the civil rights movements.  The history month was founded in 1994 by a Missouri high school history teacher Rodney Wilson.  October was chosen to coincide with National Coming Out Day, October 11th, and to honor and recognize the first and second LGBT+ marches on Washington in the late 1970s. SouthPride is SMCC’s LGBTQIA+ club, dedicated to providing a supportive and inclusive community for gay, bisexual, lesbian, transgender, questioning, asexual, and ally individuals.

The club fosters respect, understanding, and empowerment, welcoming all students to join and celebrate the diverse spectrum of LGBTQIA+ experiences. This is a place where beliefs and values are welcomed and respected. Our club can support you:
